Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour — 250g
  • 1 cup cocoa powder — 90g
  • 2 cups sugar — 400g
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk — 240ml
  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water — 240ml
  • ½ cup vegetable oil — 120ml
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Filling & Frosting

  • 500g dark chocolate
  • 2 cups whipping cream — 480ml
  • ½ cup butter — 113g
  • ¼ cup icing sugar — 30g
  • Chocolate curls or chocolate chips for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cake Batter

Preheat your oven to 170°C (340°F). Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, combine:

  • Flour
  • Cocoa powder
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Salt

Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and well combined.

Slowly pour in the hot coffee or hot water and stir gently. The batter will be thin — this creates an ultra-moist cake texture.

Step 2: Bake the Cakes

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool completely before frosting.

Step 3: Make the Chocolate Ganache Frosting

Heat the whipping cream until warm but not boiling.

Pour the warm cream over the chopped dark chocolate and let sit for 2 minutes.

Stir until smooth and glossy.

Add the butter and icing sugar, then whisk until thick and silky.

Chill slightly until the frosting becomes spreadable.

Step 4: Assemble the Cake

Place one cake layer on a serving plate.

Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting on top.

Add the second cake layer and cover the entire cake with the remaining ganache frosting.

Decorate with chocolate curls or chocolate chips.

Step 5: Chill & Serve

Refrigerate the cake for 20 minutes before slicing for clean, beautiful layers.

Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Tips

  • Hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee.
  • Use high-quality dark chocolate for a richer ganache.
  • Chill the frosting slightly before decorating for smoother spreading.

Yield

Serves 10–12 slices.
