Homemade Burger Buns

Soft, fluffy, and perfectly golden — these homemade burger buns are ideal for burgers, sandwiches, or barbecue nights. They have a light bakery-style texture and stay soft for days.


Ingredients

  • 3¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast (1 packet)
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened

Optional Topping

  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

Mix the Dough

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.
  • Add warm milk, warm water, egg, and softened butter.
  • Mix until a soft dough forms.

Knead

  • Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth, soft, and elastic.

First Rise

  • Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl.
  • Cover and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shape the Buns

  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
  • Shape each piece into a smooth ball.
  • Place on a lined baking tray and flatten slightly.

Second Rise

  • Cover loosely and allow the buns to rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.

Bake

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Brush the tops with egg wash.
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
  • Bake for 15–18 minutes or until beautifully golden brown.

Cool

  • Let the buns cool before slicing and serving.

Tips for Extra Soft Burger Buns

  • Use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour for a softer, chewier texture.
  • Add 1 tbsp milk powder for a bakery-style finish.
  • For brioche-style buns, use an extra egg and a little more butter.
  • Brush warm buns with melted butter for extra softness and shine.
