Ingredients

  • 150 ml warm water
  • 150 ml warm milk 🥛
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 8 g dry yeast
  • 30 g vegetable oil
  • 480 g wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 50 g raisins

For Brushing

  • 1 egg yolk 🥚
  • 1 tablespoon milk

How to Make Grandma’s Homemade Bread

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a large bowl, combine:

  • Warm water
  • Warm milk
  • Sugar
  • Dry yeast

Stir well, cover the bowl, and let it rest for about 5 minutes until the yeast dissolves and becomes active.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

Add vegetable oil and mix again.

Sift in the flour and add salt. Mix well.

Add raisins and gradually incorporate the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.

Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.

Step 3: First Rise

Grease a bowl lightly with sunflower oil and place the dough inside.

Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 4: Shape the Bread

Grease the loaf pan with butter.

Divide the risen dough into 4 equal parts and shape each into a ball.

Let the dough balls rest for 10 minutes.

Roll each ball flat using a rolling pin, then roll the dough tightly into a loaf shape. Press the edges firmly to seal.

Carefully place each rolled dough piece into the loaf pan.

Cover and let rest for another 20 minutes.

Step 5: Brush & Bake

Whisk together:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Brush the top of the bread with the egg mixture for a beautiful golden crust.

Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (356°F) for 35–40 minutes, or until golden brown.

Tips for Perfect Homemade Bread

  • Use warm—not hot—milk and water to activate the yeast properly.
  • Knead the dough well for soft and fluffy bread.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place for best results.
  • You can replace raisins with nuts or leave them out completely.
