Zebra Cake

Soft, Moist & Beautifully Swirled

Zebra Cake is a fun and eye-catching dessert made with alternating layers of vanilla and chocolate batter that create stunning striped patterns inside every slice. It’s soft, fluffy, lightly sweet, and perfect for tea time, birthdays, or family gatherings.

The best part? Despite its impressive appearance, this cake is surprisingly simple to make with basic pantry ingredients.

✨ Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup oil or melted butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons extra milk (for cocoa mixture)
  • Pinch of salt

Optional

  • Chocolate chips

👩‍🍳 How to Make Zebra Cake

Step 1: Prepare the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, oil (or melted butter), milk, and vanilla until smooth and creamy.

Step 2: Add the Dry Ingredients

Add the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.

Mix gently until the batter becomes smooth and lump-free. Avoid overmixing to keep the cake soft and fluffy.

Step 3: Divide the Batter

Split the batter evenly into two separate bowls.

Step 4: Make the Chocolate Batter

In one bowl, mix the cocoa powder with 2 tablespoons of milk until smooth.

Stir this cocoa mixture into one portion of the batter to create the chocolate layer.

Step 5: Create the Zebra Pattern

Grease a cake pan lightly.

Using a spoon or ladle, add 2–3 tablespoons of plain batter into the center of the pan. Then add 2–3 tablespoons of chocolate batter directly on top.

Continue alternating the batters one after another. The layers will naturally spread outward and create the beautiful zebra pattern.

Step 6: Bake the Cake

Bake in a preheated oven at 170°C (340°F) for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 7: Cool & Slice

Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing to reveal the beautiful zebra stripes inside.

💡 Tips for the Perfect Zebra Cake

  • Pour the batter slowly into the center each time for cleaner stripes.
  • Use the same amount of batter for each layer to keep the pattern even.
  • Don’t overmix the batter after adding flour.
  • Add chocolate chips for extra richness and texture.
