  1. Preheat your oven to 170Β°C (340Β°F) and line a 12-cup muffin tray with paper liners.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream the butter & sugar: In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. Make the batter: Gradually add the dry ingredients and milk, alternating between the two. Mix gently until you have a smooth batter.
  5. Prepare the chocolate batter: Transfer about ΒΎ cup of the vanilla batter into a separate bowl. Mix the cocoa powder with the hot milk (or water) until smooth, then fold it into the reserved batter.
  6. Create the marble effect: Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with vanilla batter. Add small spoonfuls of the chocolate batter on top, then use a toothpick or skewer to gently swirl the two batters together.
  7. Bake: Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
